The impact of foot temperature on Ankle-Brachial Index: A comparison between normal and heated foot temperature in individuals with healthy blood vessels (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Introduction: The Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) is a method to measure peripheral blood circulation in the legs by comparing blood pressure in the arms and ankles, but there are few guidelines for an optimal foot temperature during the measurement. The aim of this study is to compare ABI at normal and warmed foot temperatures in individuals with healthy blood vessels to investigate whether there is any significant difference in ABI between measurement occasions.
Material and method: A non-randomized observational study was conducted. The study participants consisted of 21 individuals with healthy blood vessels, aged 18–30 years, who met all inclusion criteria and none of the exclusion criteria. Temperature and ABI measurements were performed at normal and warmed (35–40 °C) foot temperatures according to international guidelines for implementation.
Results and conclusion: A paired t-test showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in ABI values between normal and warmed foot temperatures for both the right and left foot. The average increase in ABI after warming was 0.11 ± 0.08 for the right foot and 0.07 ± 0.05 for the left foot.
