A sensitive conversation : An integrative literature review of parents’ experience of conversations about their child’s overweight (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Overweight and obesity among children are growing global public health problems. The district nurse plays an important role in preventive and health-promoting work. The family is a central part of the management of childhood overweight and obesity. Nurses finds it difficult and sensitive to talk with parents about their child’s weight.
Aim: To describe parents´ experiences of talking with the district nurse about their child’s overweight or obesity.
Method: An integrative literature review with systematic database searches. The searches were conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Scopus, 15 articles were included in the literature review. Data analysis was performed according to Whittemore & Knafl’s method.
Results: The result revealed three main categories; 1) A sensitive conversation, parents experienced the relationship with the nurse as complex and the nurse’s approach was crucial to how the conversation was perceived. 2) A great responsibility, parents felt that the nurse had preconceived notions and did not involve them in the conversation, which made it easy to feel like a failing parent. 3) Ambivalence toward the information, Parents wanted to gain knowledge and information about their child’s weight status but felt distrustful of the growth measurements.
Conclusion: Parents perceived the conversation as sensitive, associated with a great sense of responsibility and they felt ambivalent about the information. To strengthen the district nurse’s health-promoting work with parents, a family-centered approach to nursing is needed, in which the conversation is characterized by trust, participation, and information sharing.
